Hoguk Jijangsa (Seoul)

Hoguk Jijangsa is said to have been founded by the renowned geomancer Master Doseon in 670, but since Master Doseon was a 9th-century figure, it seems more reasonable to view it as having been founded in the late 9th century rather than the 7th century. Master Doseon is said to have named it Galgung-sa because the site was a propitious spot with tangled kudzu vines and medicinal spring water. Later, the dilapidated Galgung-sa was rebuilt by Monk Boin during the reign of King Gongmin, and the temple name was changed to Hwajang-am. According to the *Bongeun Bonmal Saji*, in 1577, when the tomb of King Seonjo's biological grandmother, Lady An of Changbin, was moved nearby, this temple was designated as a royal tomb temple and renamed Hwajang-sa, and it is said to have been repaired in 1663. Subsequently, in 1862, two monks, Undam and Gyeonghae, rebuilt it. In 1870, Undam and Gyeonghae newly constructed the Gyeongparu pavilion, and in 1878, the abbot Seongwol and Monk Gyeonghae repaired the main hall. In 1896, the Chilseonggak shrine was newly built, and in 1920, the abbots Wonong and Myeongjin repaired the large hall. In 1936, the abbot Yu Yeong-song repaired the Neunginjeon hall. After the Korean War, a national cemetery was established here, and in 1983, the temple name was changed again to Hoguk Jijangsa, continuing to the present day.
