Navy Yeongheungdo Battle Monument

After crossing Yeongheung Bridge and entering Yeongheungdo, take the left road to find a hill where a monument soaring high into the sky and a statue of a navy soldier in a pose as if bravely charging toward the sea stand. This is the location of the Navy Yeongheungdo Battle Monument. The Navy Yeongheungdo Battle Monument was erected to commemorate the noble achievements of the Navy Intelligence Unit and 14 members of the Yeongheungdo Anti-Communist Youth Group during the Incheon Landing Operation in the Korean War in 1950. On September 15, 1950, the Republic of Korea Armed Forces and UN forces successfully completed the Incheon Landing Operation, in which not only soldiers but also defense members of the Korean Youth Group organized by Yeongheungdo residents participated. On September 13, facing a North Korean battalion-level force, the youth defense members made a decisive contribution to leading the operation to victory under the desperate naval gunfire support of the 703rd Fleet. The monument contains the noble achievements of the fallen naval combatants of the Yeongheung District and the defense members of the Yeongheung-myeon Korean Youth Group, and was built to honor their spirit of sacrifice and promote security awareness. Near the monument, the decommissioned navy ship Chamsuri is also displayed for viewing. Chamsuri is a high-speed boat that performed missions to deter North Korea's preemptive provocations, such as ramming enemy ships during engagements with North Korean patrol boats to damage their hulls. The Navy Yeongheungdo Battle Monument and Chamsuri are valuable places that inspire historical and security awareness.
