Mangwol Dundae and Fortress Wall

A dundae is a small observation and defense facility built along coastlines or border areas. Soldiers stand guard inside the dundae, monitoring and responding to various suspicious activities, including enemy reconnaissance. When enemies invade, they engage in defensive battles using weapons stored inside the dundae. This dundae in Mangwol-ri is constructed by stacking stones measuring 40 to 120 cm in a rectangular shape. A low wall made of earthen bricks once surrounded the top of the fortress, but only traces remain today. Mangwol Dundae was one of 48 dundaes built in 1679 (the 5th year of King Sukjong's reign) and was under the direct jurisdiction of Jinmuyeong (the military command). It has a square structure with a perimeter of 124 m and stone walls ranging from 180 to 300 cm in height. Unlike most dundaes, which are located on high coastal areas, Mangwol Dundae was built on low tidal flats. Nevertheless, there are no obstructions blocking the view, making it sufficient as a guard post. To the south lies Gyeryong Dundae, and to the north is Mutae Dundae. This fortress wall, accompanying the dundae, was built by King Gojong of Goryeo when he moved the capital to Ganghwa Island to strengthen coastal defenses. It originally had six gates with pavilions and seven water gates.
