Munheonsa (Sambong Jeong Do-jeon Shrine)

Munheonsa is a memorial shrine enshrining the permanent ancestral tablet of Munheongong Sambong (三峯) Jeong Do-jeon. Every year on the 9th day of the 9th lunar month, Pyeongtaek City holds a memorial service here to honor the achievements of Master Sambong. During the turbulent end of the Goryeo Dynasty, Master Sambong assisted Yi Seong-gye in founding the Joseon Dynasty, becoming a Pure Loyalty Righteousness Meritorious Subject (純忠奮義佐命開國功臣) and being enfeoffed as Bonghwa Count (奉化伯). He authored many renowned works such as Joseon Gyeonggukjeon (朝鮮經國典), Gyeongje Mungam (經濟文鑑), Bulssi Japbyeon (佛氏雜辨), Simgiripyeon (心氣理篇), and Simmun Cheondap (心問天答), presenting the principles of governance based on benevolent people-oriented politics, using these as standards for politics, economy, and society, ultimately transforming Goryeo's Buddhist state religion into Confucianism. In the 3rd year of King Taejo's reign, when the capital was moved to Hanyang, he designed the site of the capital city and named the palace halls, the four main gates, the four minor gates, and the 52 districts of Hanseongbu. In 1395, King Taejo highly praised Master Sambong's achievements and bestowed upon him a royal calligraphy reading 'Yujong Gongjong' (儒宗功宗) along with a nine-tiered box. In 1865, King Gojong granted a hanging board inscribed with 'Yujong Gongjong'. Master Sambong was the greatest Neo-Confucian scholar of the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods, a man of both literary and military talent, and a great statesman who established the founding policies and guiding principles of the Joseon Dynasty.
