Maesan Seowon

Maesan Seowon was established during the reign of King Sejo by Confucian scholars from Geochang and Sancheong in Gyeongsangnam-do to commemorate the scholarship and virtue of Samudang[三憂堂] Mun Ik-jeom[文益漸]. Later, considering his friendship with Mogeun Yi Saek, he was additionally enshrined and granted the name Maesan[梅山] by royal decree. During the Manchu invasion of 1636, his descendant Mun Gyeom[文謙] relocated it to its current location and held ancestral rites in spring and autumn. However, it was demolished in 1868 under Heungseon Daewongun's order to abolish seowon. Afterwards, Mun Gwang-gyu[文光圭], a descendant of Samudang who became the chief of Yeoju Police Station, restored it, leading to its present state. It was renovated once more in 1978, and in 1987, the shrine within the seowon was demolished and rebuilt.
