Gang Yeongcheon Hyojamun (Filial Piety Gate of Gang Yeongcheon)

경기도 가평군 북면 논남기길 402-19

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

The filial son Gang Yeongcheon was a member of the Jinju Gang clan. He lost his father at the age of three and lived with his widowed mother, Yeonil Jeong. When he was seven, his mother fell ill and became bedridden. Although young, Yeongcheon was deeply devoted to his mother. While caring for her, her condition worsened and she lost consciousness. In desperation, he broke his finger on the threshold to draw blood, which he let drip into her mouth, and then collapsed. When his mother regained consciousness and found her young son bleeding and collapsed, she nursed him back to health with devoted care. Based on the plaque hanging in front of the gate, which reads 'Hyojaeopmu Gang Yeongcheon Ji Mun-gak, the 39th year of Kangxi, Gyeongjin year, 3rd month, 15th day erected,' it is known that this filial piety gate was built in the 26th year of King Sukjong (March 15, 1700). The original structure was lost over nearly 290 years and was restored in 1987.
