Why travelers stop here
Jo Byeong-hwa Literature Museum is a literary memorial hall that permanently displays the relics, creative works, and paintings of poet Jo Byeong-hwa (pen name Pyeonun). It is nestled like a charming country house within Pyeonun Garden in Nansil-ri. The museum embodies the poetic spirit of dreams and love that the poet pursued throughout his lifetime of creative work, preserving a trace of modern Korean literature. Built in 1993 with land provided by the poet and government support, the museum is a two-story building with a total floor area of 85 pyeong, along with an annex of 8 pyeong, constructed as a cultural salon. It features two exhibition rooms on the first floor and a seminar room on the second floor. The museum houses special exhibitions, 53 collections of poetry, essays, and art books totaling over 160 volumes left by the poet, as well as his relics. In Pyeonun Garden, besides the museum, there is Pyeonunjae, a hut built by the poet next to his mother's grave in 1963; Cheongwahheon, a countryside house where the poet wrote and rested after retiring from teaching; and the poet's own grave. In harmony with the poet's easily readable yet deeply moving poetry, Pyeonun Garden offers a subtle and serene landscape. Additionally, every May, the museum hosts the Dream and Love Poetry Festival, providing a wonderful opportunity to share the resonance of literature with many people.
