Why travelers stop here
The Japanese Military Comfort Women History Museum, opened on August 14, 1998 at Nanum House in Gwangju City, is the world's first human rights museum themed on wartime sexual slavery. It was established to expose the war crimes of the Japanese military, restore the honor of the victimized grandmothers, and serve as a venue for historical education for future generations. The first history museum has two floors above ground and one basement floor, while the second history museum has two floors above ground. They were built with donations from ordinary citizens and concerned Japanese people.
The first history museum consists of five exhibition spaces: the Hall of History, the Hall of Testimony, the Hall of Experience, the Hall of Records, and the Hall of Accusation. In the third exhibition space, the Hall of Experience, the victim's room from that time is recreated, along with items used there. The testimonies of the victimized grandmothers shown on screens convey the pain of that era. In the fourth exhibition space, the Hall of Records, visitors can hear the recorded testimony of Grandmother Kim Hak-soon from 1991. Starting with this testimony, many victims began to speak out to the world about the Japanese military's sexual slavery system.
