Why travelers stop here
Located in the northern part of Gyeonggi Province, Yangju City is a historically rich cultural area boasting over 600 years of history and tradition, preserving important tangible and intangible cultural heritage. Among them, Hoeamsa Temple, situated at the foot of Cheonbosan Mountain in Hoeam-dong, was the largest royal temple of the Joseon Dynasty, receiving active royal support during the Confucian-oriented Joseon period, and holds a significant place in Korean Buddhist history.
Although the splendor of that time can no longer be seen, it is not difficult to imagine the status of Hoeamsa Temple through the remains left at the temple site. Yangju City established a comprehensive maintenance plan for the Hoeamsa Temple site to develop it into the best tourist destination and historical education site in northern Gyeonggi Province. According to the comprehensive maintenance plan, projects such as excavation surveys of the Hoeamsa Temple site, museum construction, and maintenance of relics and facilities have been carried out annually. The Yangju City Hoeamsa Temple Site Museum, as part of this project, opened on October 19, 2012, and has continued to the present.
