The Academy of Korean Studies, Korean Studies Library and Jangseogak

The Academy of Korean Studies is a research and educational institution responsible for in-depth research and education on Korean culture. Along with the Korean Studies Advancement Center and Seoul National University's Kyujanggak Institute for Korean Studies, it is one of the three major domestic public institutions that receive focused support for Korean studies research. Among them, the Korean Studies Library contributes to Korean studies research and the training of Korean studies researchers by collecting basic Korean studies materials and research data and providing them online and offline. Since its opening in 1981, it has housed over 300,000 domestic books covering humanities and social sciences such as literature, history, and society, as well as a total of over 500,000 volumes including Asian and Western books. For digital materials, the Korean Studies Comprehensive Service (Rinks) is available to both researchers and the general public. Jangseogak is a library and research institute that collects and manages valuable ancient documents once housed by the Joseon royal family. It holds 120,000 volumes of royal books stored in Joseon palaces and over 60,000 items of private ancient documents collected nationwide, serving as a central hub for the accumulation and research of Korean studies materials. In particular, it aims for comprehensive research on Korean history by collecting private ancient documents at risk of extinction and restoring them through scientific preservation. Valuable materials held by Jangseogak include Dongui Bogam, the Uigwe of the Joseon Dynasty, and Worin Cheon-gang Jigok.
