Why travelers stop here
Ilsan Market was formed around Ilsan Sageori after the Gyeongui Line railway opened in 1908 and the township office moved to Ilsan. At that time, it enjoyed prosperity as the central commercial district of Goyang and Paju, but the space was cramped compared to the number of visitors, causing inconvenience. In 1956, the market was reorganized by reclaiming rice paddies, and it flourished with market days set on the 3rd and 8th of each month at its current location, even forming a cattle market. In 1979, as part of a traditional market modernization plan, the individual wooden buildings were rebuilt into a reinforced concrete complex, and the market moved in 1983, continuing to this day. Beyond simply being a place to buy and sell goods, it holds folk value as a traditional five-day market that maintains the legacy of such markets in the city center. Ilsan Traditional Market also handles unique products that are hard to find in department stores or large supermarkets, and sells a variety of items at affordable prices.
