Gyeonggi Anseongjang (2nd, 7th)

경기도 안성시 시장길 37 (서인동)

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Anseongjang was a large-scale market during the Joseon Dynasty, considered one of the three major markets along with Daegu and Jeonju, serving as a gateway to Seoul. It was a bustling market with various crafts and many inns, to the extent that it was said to have two or three more items than Seoul. However, it has now been modernized to the point where it is hard to find its old appearance. The previously messy old market has been renovated into a clean and tidy look, with high roofs allowing comfortable shopping regardless of season or weather. One of the factors that allowed Anseongjang to develop was the large production of brassware in Anseong. However, after the Gyeongbu Line changed its route to Pyeongtaek, the market gradually declined. Currently, the proportion of agricultural products in market transactions has decreased, while the proportion of livestock transactions has significantly increased. The market is also held on the 2nd and 7th along the main road between the Anseong Intercity Bus Terminal and the central market. Various vegetables, strawberries, mugwort, and spring greens like sow thistle are prominent, and the sight of selling meju (fermented soybean blocks) and jangdok (fermented soybean paste pots) is especially heartwarming. On the roadside outside the market, elderly men and women spread out bundles of various spring greens, grains such as beans and barley, and medicinal herbs, waiting for customers, allowing visitors to feel the charm of the traditional five-day market.
