Ganjeolgot Lighthouse

Ganjeolgot in Daesong-ri, Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun is the place on the Korean Peninsula where the first sunrise of the new millennium occurs. At Ganjeolgot, you can greet the earliest sunrise on the east coast. The Ganjeolgot Lighthouse first lit its beacon on March 26, 1920, and for over a hundred years has consistently guided ships into Ulsan Port. It became famous as the lighthouse at Ganjeolgot where the new millennium's sun rose first at 7:31:26 AM on January 1, 2000. The sunrise begins one minute earlier than at Homigot in Yeongilman Bay and five minutes earlier than at Jeongdongjin in Gangneung, creating a spectacular scene. Along with Ulsan's Jinhae Beach and Seosaengpo Waeseong, it is gaining attention as a new attraction. Although it is a 20-minute drive from the entrance of the Ulsan Southern Beltway, the refreshing scenery feels as if you have traveled far away, giving a foreign ambiance. Inside the white lighthouse standing tall facing the sea, a spiral staircase leads up, and the view of the sea from the lighthouse window offers a fresh perspective. When acacias bloom, driving along the coastline from Ulsan toward Busan's Haeundae, the scent of acacia is more profound than the sea breeze. This road, lined with drooping acacia branches heavy with white blossoms and occasionally opening up to the sea, is perfect for a drive at any time.
