Galcheon-dong Choga Kkachigumeongjip

경상북도 영덕군 창수면 장육사길 363

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Kkachigumeongjip is a thatched house believed to have been built around the same time as Hwasuru, constructed as a residence for the building managers. It was built as a double-layered house to minimize heat loss, commonly seen in mountainous areas of Gangwon-do, with rooms attached to each other in a 田-shaped floor plan. The name 'Kkachigumeongjip' comes from the holes located just below both ends of the ridge, which allow smoke from cooking and heating to escape. The house has a front of 3 kan and a side of 2 kan. In general, mountainous regions have low temperatures and heavy snow, so house structures that create a closed interior space to minimize heat loss and shorten movement paths have developed, and such features are commonly seen in the mountainous areas of Gangwon-do and northern Gyeongsangbuk-do.
