Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

According to the *Jeungbo Munheon Bigo* (Revised and Augmented Edition of the Reference Compilation of Documents), Madojin Manho Fortress was a stone fortress with a circumference of 890 *ja* (approx. 270 m) and a height of 12 *ja* (approx. 3.6 m), but only part of the northwestern wall remains today. The total length of the fortress walls is about 730 m. The foundation was built with large square and rectangular stones, and the upper sections were constructed using smaller stones (approx. 30×20 cm) with the *naetakbeop* (inner support method). The surviving northwestern wall measures 220 m in length, 2.3–4.7 m in height, 1 m in top width, and 2.5 m in bottom width. Maryang, where Madojin is located, is situated on the southwestern coast of Korea, connecting Gangjin, Jangheung, Haenam, and Yeongam, and serves as a strategic point linking to Jeju Island. The Madojin Manho Fortress Site is located along the roadside (next to Local Road 23) entering Maryang. The Madojin Fortress, also commonly called *Malmeori* (Horse Head), is situated behind the *baesan* (back mountain) of Maryang and lies in a rectangular shape to the northwest of Wonma Village, possessing natural conditions ideal for a naval port. To the front (sea side), islands such as Gogumdo, Kkamakseom, and Norimuk provide double or triple outer protection, while on the land side, it is wrapped around the ridge of Malmeori Mountain, concealing and sheltering it from the outside.

The Madojin Fortress was built on a hill that is low to the south and high to the north, but only part of the northwestern wall remains. Based on the remains, the total length of the fortress walls is about 730 m, constructed using square and small stones with the *naetakbeop* (inner support method). The surviving northwestern wall measures 220 m in length, 2.3–4.7 m in height, about 1 m in top width, and about 2.5 m in bottom width. The eastern, western, and southern walls have been used as fences for facilities such as Maryang Police Station, but only the foundation parts are partially visible today. Among other auxiliary facilities, only the foundation stones of the North Gate site are confirmed. The gate site measures 4.3 m in width and 1.6 m in height, and is at risk of imminent destruction due to a recent road expansion project. Meanwhile, near the northwestern wall, one monument to the virtuous governance of *Haeng Manho* (Acting Manho) Lee Jong-ho remains, measuring 130 cm in height, 50 cm in width, and 15 cm in thickness.

* Area - 28 parcels, 4,237 ㎡
* Period - Joseon Dynasty (fortress built around 1499)
