Gosan Seowon (Andong)

경상북도 안동시 남후면 암산1길 53-1

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

This is a seowon (Confucian academy) built on the site of Gosan Jeongsa, which was established by Daesan Yi Sang-jeong (1711–1781), a scholar of the Joseon Dynasty, for academic pursuits and nurturing future generations. Later, in 1789, a seowon was founded by the consensus of local Confucian scholars to commemorate the scholarly virtue of Master Daesan, and a memorial tablet was enshrined. Gosan Seowon served the roles of honoring former sages and contributing to local education until it was demolished in 1868, after which only ancestral rites were held. In 1977, Gosan Jeongsa and Baekseunggak were repaired, and in 1984 and 1985, the lecture hall Hoindang, the shrine Gyeonghaengsa, and the east dormitory were rebuilt. In 1985, by the consensus of Confucian scholars, Sosan Yi Gwang-jeong was additionally enshrined. Available experiences include a traditional old house stay overnight in five experience rooms.
