Guksu Bawi (Noodle Rock)

Gyeongsangbukdo Ulreunggun Seomyeon Namyangri

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Guksu Bawi is a massive rock formation created approximately 1.57 million years ago by the eruption of trachytic lava, measuring about 30 meters in height and 300 meters in length. Its walls feature numerous columnar joints forming long strips resembling noodles. Columnar joints are cracks formed when hot lava rapidly cools upon contact with air or water, contracting and splitting into angular pillar shapes. According to legend, King Uhae of Usanguk, grieving the death of his beloved queen (Pungminyeo), set up a folding screen at Guksu Bawi (Bipasan) and held a 100-day memorial rite, ordering twelve maids to play the bipa (a traditional lute) daily.
