Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Ingaksa Temple Site is a temple site located in the sedimentary zone of the riverside at the northern foot of Hwasan Mountain in Samgukyusa-myeon, Gunwi-gun. Through an excavation survey conducted by the Kyungpook National University Museum at the end of 1991, a building site from the Unified Silla period was confirmed on the stylobate presumed to be the main hall site. The official designation of the historic site is [Gunwi Ingaksa Temple Site]. Ingaksa Temple is known to have been founded by Great Master Uisang in 643 (the 11th year of Queen Seondeok). It flourished from the Unified Silla period, and during the Goryeo period, National Preceptor Il-yeon stayed here for five years from 1284 (the 10th year of King Chungnyeol) until his death, writing the 'Samguk Yusa' (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms). It is said that Ingaksa Temple hosted the Nine Mountain School Assembly twice during this time, indicating that it was a major center of Buddhism nationwide at that time.
