Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Geumjeonsan Mountain (668m above sea level), located behind Nagan-eupseong Fortress in Nagan-myeon, was formerly called Soesan Mountain, but its name was changed to Geumjeonsan about 100 years ago. The Chinese character meaning is 'gold money mountain,' but according to the monks at Geumgangam Hermitage, the name originates from Buddhism, derived from Geumjeon Biku, one of the Five Hundred Bhikkhus (Five Hundred Arhats), the outstanding disciples of the Buddha.

Geumjeonsan is a branch ridge extending from the Honam Jeongmaek mountain range, which connects Baegisan, Godongsan, and Jogyesan. The western face of the summit is entirely covered with rocks, forming spectacular cliffs and rock walls. At sunset, the rocky mountain is dyed in red, evoking a sense of mystery and awe. The mountain consists of large rock formations, giving it a massive and heavy appearance, and from a distance, it looks like the Chinese character '金' (gold). Hiking trails to the summit include a course from Buljae Pass passing through Guneungsu, a course starting from Ogeumjae Pass (the ridge connecting Nagan to Sangsaho Lake), and a course going directly from Nagan Hot Spring to Geumgangam Hermitage.
