Why travelers stop here
Gang Jae-gu Park is located along a local road following Seongdongcheon Stream in the northern direction, not far from Hongcheon-eup. The late Major Gang Jae-gu, on October 4, 1965, during final training to participate in the Vietnam War, threw himself onto a grenade mistakenly thrown by a subordinate, saving the lives of his men but sacrificing his own. To honor his noble spirit of self-sacrifice, a memorial monument was erected at the site of his sacrifice, and the surrounding area was developed into a park, now used as an educational site. Every October 4, the deceased's bereaved family and Korea Military Academy classmates visit to pay tribute to his noble soul. The park was completed in 1973 on about 10,000 pyeong of land donated by Kim Gyeong-hwang of Seoul Daegyeong Timber, and in November 1987, a memorial hall with an area of 82.64㎡ was built next to the monument, displaying 125 of his personal belongings.
