Hongcheon River

Hongcheon River is a major tributary of the Han River, originating in Seoseok-myeon, Hongcheon-gun, Gangwon-do, and flowing into Cheongpyeong Lake. It is a representative tourist destination in Gangwon-do, with a wide river basin and many tourist attractions nearby, offering various activities such as leisure sports, camping, and fishing. The water is shallow and warm, and the fish species are diverse and abundant, allowing fishing anywhere. From the upstream, there are several recreation areas such as Gulji-ri, Palbongsan, Bambeol, and Magok. The Gulji-ri Recreation Area, located in the uppermost stream with cold and clean water, is relatively quiet. The Palbongsan Recreation Area has shallow water and offers light mountain walks. The Bambeol Recreation Area features beautiful scenery with gravel and sand covering the riverside. The Magok Recreation Area, which leads to Cheongpyeong Lake, has deep water, allowing water sports such as boating and jet skiing. Hongcheon River boasts many beautiful valleys, including Miyakgol, where a fairy is said to have bathed, Yongsogok with Yongsam Rock and Yongsso Spring, and Saldungok, meaning a mound suitable for living. The Hongcheon River Auto Camping Site hosts the Starlight Music Beer Festival every year, and in January, the Hongcheon River Kkongkkong Festival, one of the representative winter festivals, takes place. Around Hongcheon River, there are various tourist attractions such as Suta Temple, founded in the 7th year of King Seongdeok of Silla, Geumhaksan Mountain at 462m above sea level, and Palbongsan Mountain with eight peaks resembling a peacock spreading its wings.
