Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

A stupa is a structure that symbolizes a monk's grave and houses their remains or sarira. This stupa field is located in the fir forest along the path from Woljeongsa Temple to Sangwonsa Temple, with a total of 22 stupas scattered about. These stupas enshrine the sarira of monks with dharma names such as Ungong Seonggwan and Geumseongdang. Most of them consist of a bell-shaped body stone placed on a low base, but occasionally one can also spot stupas with a two-tiered platform and a roof stone. Their size is not tall, ranging from 1 to 2 meters, and they are presumed to have been erected after the mid-Joseon Dynasty.
