Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

A 1,004m-high pass located on the boundary between Seo-myeon, Yangyang-gun, and Buk-myeon and Girin-myeon, Inje-gun, Gangwon-do. The pass, which lies on the border between Inner Seorak and South Seorak, is called Osaekryeong in Yangyang and Hangyeryeong in Inje. In the late Joseon Dynasty, the Silhak scholar Yi Jung-hwan named the six famous passes of Gangwon-do in his 'Taengniji', and among them, he praised Osaekryeong as the best. Since ancient times, Osaekryeong has been a mountain pass used to transport daily necessities from Yangyang (Yeongdong) to Inje (Yeongseo), and a rugged mountain road that Yangyang residents had to cross when traveling to Seoul. The popular song 'Hangyeryeong', which takes Osaekryeong as its subject, captures the joys and sorrows of those who traveled the road. In 1981, road expansion work was carried out, and the Hangyeryeong road connecting Yangyang and Inje was opened. Today, the Osaekryeong pass on National Route 44 is known as Gangwon-do's best driving course and a tourist attraction where one can enjoy the splendid scenery of Seoraksan Mountain. It is the starting point of the shortest hiking trail to Daecheongbong, the highest peak of Seoraksan, and the hiking trail to the summit of Jombongsan also begins here.
