Sunpo Wetland

The Sunpo-gae wetland, which had great ecological value, was left unattended and was at risk of disappearing as it turned into a swamp due to inlandization. Accordingly, the wetland was restored. Through a restoration project that began in 2011, it was reborn as a wetland park with convenience facilities such as a bird observation deck. In the national inland wetland survey, Sunpo Wetland was evaluated as small in size but retaining the characteristics of a typical lagoon and having high value as an educational site. Birds such as the Eurasian siskin, Oriental reed warbler, grey heron, spot-billed duck, Eurasian sparrowhawk, and common kestrel are representative birds that visit the wetland. In particular, the whooper swan, the city bird of Gangneung, visits as a winter migratory bird in late autumn and winter. Among fish, the Chinese stickleback, which has been removed from the endangered species list, as well as the Japanese rice fish, Chinese minnow, crucian carp, carp, and northern snakehead, have established themselves and live there. As a habitat for various wetland organisms, it is perfect not only for ecotourism but also as an educational venue.
