Gimi Manse Park

강원특별자치도 홍천군 내촌면 동창로 165

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Hongcheon was the site of the last stand of the Donghak Peasant Army and also a place where the Manse (Independence) Movement was fiercely waged during the Japanese colonial period. Gimi Manse Park is a place that reminds us of such noble spirit. On April 1, 1919, in defiance of Japanese oppression, eight martyrs died here during the Manse Movement. In 1963, the government and the people jointly built Palryeolgak (a pavilion for the eight martyrs) to commemorate them. As time passed and Palryeolgak became old, on February 28, 1990, the Gimi Manse Park Promotion Committee was formed to honor the spirit of all the patriots who participated in the Manse Movement. With donations from the citizens, help from benefactors, and investment of county funds, the Gimi Manse Statue was erected and the park was created with auxiliary facilities. This place was established to pass down to future generations the noble patriotic loyalty of the eight martyrs and other ancestors.
