Stone Pagoda Remains at Buheungsa Temple Site, Wonju

These are parts of a pagoda that were scattered around the site of Buheungsa Temple. The lower base and part of the upper base, one body stone of the pagoda body, and two roof stones were collected and placed next to a private house. On the upper base, pillar shapes are carved in the center and corners of each face, and eight guardians (the eight groups of deities that protect the Buddhist law and edify the public in Buddhism) are carved in the eight sections divided by the pillar carvings. The body stone of the pagoda body has pillar shapes carved on it, and the roof stones have four-tiered supports on their undersides, with holes remaining at the four corners where bells were once hung. This pagoda is notable for the unusual circular halo carved on the head part of the divine statue on the upper base, and it is important material for the study of Buddhism in the Wonju region. Based on the carving style of the upper base and the assembly of the pagoda body, it is believed to have been built in the early Goryeo period.
