Soyanggang Haangdan-gu (Gangwon Peace Region National Geopark)

Haangdan-gu refers to a stair-like landform that appears around rivers when gravel and sand, which had been deposited by floods along riverbanks before the east-west tilting orogeny (a large-scale uplift that formed the basic framework of the Korean Peninsula, with the east side high and the west side low), were eroded by river water after the ground uplifted. These river terraces have long been used as major living grounds in areas around the Taebaek Mountains, such as farmland and residential areas.
