강원특별자치도 양구군 국토정중앙면 심포리

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

In the Iron Triangle connecting Cheorwon, Pyeonggang, and Gimhwa, fierce battles took place twice from May 18 to 21 and June 18 to 21, 1952. In these battles, the Philippine 19th and 20th Battle Groups fought intense battles against the Chinese Communist Forces and Volunteer Forces over the hills. The first battle was so fierce that the hill changed hands nine times over three days, and it ended with the Philippine forces recapturing the hill. In the second battle, they held the hill to the end with strong fire support, and the Chinese Communist Forces and Volunteer Forces retreated, abandoning equipment including two tanks. After the battle, the Philippine forces moved to the Simpo-ri area of Yanggu and were stationed there, and it is presumed that the battle monument was erected during this period.
