Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Hwacheon Hwaeum-dong Jeongsa Site is where Gokun Kim Su-jeung, a civil official and Neo-Confucian scholar of the mid-to-late Joseon Dynasty, retreated and realized his Neo-Confucian ideal world. Kim Su-jeung, upon being appointed as Pyeonggang Magistrate in 1668, became acquainted with the beautiful nature of the valley north of Mount Hwaaksan, and in 1670 built Gokun Jeongsa in Yeongdang-dong, Sanae-myeon, and managed Gokun Gugok. He later participated in central politics, but in 1689, due to the Gisa Hwanguk (change of reign), he abandoned his official post and returned to his hometown. Afterwards, he built a study in Hwaeum-dong and, based on his philosophy and worldview, sought to cultivate disciples and realize his ideal world. Currently, among the buildings that existed at that time, the restored Samiljeong and Songpungjeong remain.
