Chuncheon Kim Jeong-eun House

Chuncheon Kim Jeong-eun House is a traditional hanok located at 44 Sotbal 1-gil, Sindong-myeon, Chuncheon-si, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province, and is designated as a Gangwon-do Cultural Heritage Material. It was built in 1920 and is said to have been constructed by the carpenter who built the Choi Jae-geun traditional house. The site was formerly known as a goblin site, but a story is told that after the ancestors of the current house built the house, lightning struck a wisteria tree and the tree was thrown over the mountain, after which the family prospered. The house consists of an 'ㄱ'-shaped inner quarters (anchae), a 'ㅡ'-shaped sarangchae (guest quarters), and a gate with a high entrance (soteuldae mun), following the typical tiled-roof house structure of the central Yeongseo region. It exhibits traditional architectural style with precise consideration of the layout of external spaces, the dressing of wood, and the size of members. A maple tree shades the courtyard, and together with the pine forest at the rear, it adds to the charm of the old house. It is currently operated under the name 'Chuncheon Gotak Café', allowing visitors to enjoy coffee in a traditional space. The interior features a traditional ondol floor structure with a bean-dam (kongdam) system, and there is a room finished with hanji (traditional Korean paper) made by master Jang Yong-hun, a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Heritage. The design allows natural light and views of the old house's garden through the paper doors. This old house operates by reservation, and visitors can experience both traditional culture and daily life at the same time.
