Bohyeonsa Temple (Gangneung)

Bohyeonsa Temple is a branch temple of Woljeongsa Temple, the head temple of the 4th Diocese of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Located directly below Daegwallyeong Pass and Seonjaryeong Ridge, the temple boasts superb surrounding scenery due to its high elevation. The buildings, including Daeungjeon Hall, Yeongsanjeon Hall, Jijangjeon Hall, Samseonggak Shrine, and Geumgangru Pavilion, harmonize beautifully with nature according to traditional Buddhist architectural principles, allowing visitors to fully experience the serene atmosphere of a mountain temple.

A legend surrounds the founding of Bohyeonsa Temple. According to the tale, the temple was founded by the Bodhisattva Bohyeon (Samantabhadra). It is said to have been established by Great Master Jajang in 650 (the 4th year of Queen Jindeok). Later, in 889 (the 3rd year of Queen Jinseong), Great Master Nangwon greatly expanded the temple under the name 'Jijang Seonwon,' giving Bohyeonsa Temple its proper form as a Buddhist monastery and leading to its prosperity. Great Master Nangwon was a distinguished monk who inherited the dharma lineage of National Preceptor Beomil, the founding patriarch of the Sagulsan Order. When National Preceptor Beomil passed away in 889, Nangwon erected a stupa and stele in his honor and, with the support of Minister Mingyu, took up residence at Bohyeonsa Temple.
