Gukjisan Mountain

Gukjisan Mountain is a 626m-high mountain located south of the Seogang River, occupying the end of the Yeongwol mountain range. It is connected to Wangbaksan, Gachangsan, Samtaesan, and Taehwasan Mountains, and is approximately 5km south of Cheongnyeongpo, the place of exile for Danjong, the 6th king of the Joseon Dynasty. You can also see the Danjongbi (stele for King Danjong) and Chiryongdonggol Valley. The mountain has gentle and soft slopes, making it suitable for family hikes, and it is better to enjoy the view from Mangbawi Rock before reaching the summit rather than from the summit itself. To the north, Bongraesan and Gyejoksan Mountains surrounding Yeongwol-eup are visible, with the peaks of Wantaeksan and Gogosan Mountains stretching in a ridge between them. To the southeast, Taehwasan Mountain stands like a folding screen, and far to the right, the main ridge of the Sobaeksan Mountains leading to Sinseonbong, Gukmangbong, and Sobaeksan can also be seen. There are two hiking trails: one starting from Hanjaesan Mountain (approximately 4.5km, taking about 3 hours, following Gukjigol Valley) and another starting from Sinseonbong Peak (approximately 3km, taking about 2 hours, passing Geomgaksan Mountain). From the summit of Gukjisan, you can enjoy views of the Seogang River flowing and the surrounding mountains.

Nearby attractions include Cheongnyeongpo (the exile site of King Danjong), the Korean Peninsula-shaped terrain of Seonam Village, and Jangneung (the tomb of King Danjong) surrounded by dense pine forests, making it a good idea to visit cultural heritage sites along with Yeongwol's nature.
