Soyang Lake (Inje)

Soyang Lake, along with Chungju Lake, is one of the largest artificial lakes in Korea, created in 1973 upon the completion of the 123-meter-high Soyang Dam. Spanning Chuncheon-si, Yanggu-gun, and Inje-gun in Gangwon-do, Soyang Lake is nicknamed the 'inland sea' and serves as a key water resource for the capital region located downstream of the Han River. The lake covers an area of approximately 70㎢, with a watershed area of 2793㎢ and a total storage capacity of about 2.9 billion tons. Among the scattered islands, you can enjoy fishing in the valleys around the lake, where aquaculture farms and over 50 species of freshwater fish such as crucian carp, trout, carp, eel, and smelt thrive. The Soyang River Trail, though not widely known, preserves pristine nature and outstanding riverside scenery, making it ideal for a peaceful healing walk to refresh the mind and body. The trail is a single path, so there is no worry of getting lost. Along the way, you can fully appreciate Korea's beautiful nature, passing through the typical rural village of Salgumi Village, tranquil fields by the river, forest paths accompanied by the sound of flowing water, stone tower paths, and a seonangdang (village guardian shrine). Various activities are available. You can take a cruise on Soyang Lake to enjoy the lake scenery, or travel by cruise from Soyang Lake to Cheongpyeongsa Temple. Cheongpyeongsa, a temple founded during the Goryeo period, preserves its Daeungjeon and Mireukjeon halls, which are designated as national treasures. While exploring Soyang Lake, you can also view various sculptures and structures, including a fish-shaped artificial island, a freshwater monument inscribed with the history of Soyanggang Dam, the Soyanggang Maiden Statue, and the Soyanggang Dam Construction Memorial.
