Bibongsan (Yanggu)

Bibongsan is a mountain with an elevation of 458m located in Yanggu-eup, Yanggu-gun, Gangwon-do, and is part of the mountain range extending from Dosolsan, serving as the main guardian mountain of the Yanggu area. In the past, it was located 2 ri from the Yanggu government office and was considered the central mountain range, and it is marked as a major mountain along with Yanggu-eup on various old maps. On the northern slope of the mountain, some remains of a mountain fortress site, said to have been built during the Three Kingdoms period, are preserved, and at the foot of the mountain, stone walls remain as traces of an altar where rituals were reportedly held. In Bibong Park, named after the mountain, there are a monument commemorating the great victory of righteous army leader Yu In-seok, a memorial tower honoring fallen soldiers of the Korean War, and a statue of the painter Park Su-geun. On the southern slope of Bibong Park, the endemic Korean plant Gaene-sam (Echinosophora koreensis) grows naturally, and this area is the southern limit of its distribution, making it ecologically significant.
