Destination briefing
Why travelers stop here
The Wonju Station Water Tower, located at the old Wonju Station, was installed to supply water to steam locomotives operating on the Jungang Line. At the very top of the water tower was a water tank, and below it were pump facilities that drew the water up. The top features four ventilation windows, showing the typical appearance of a 1940s water tower. It disappeared with the advent of diesel locomotives in the 1950s, but it holds great value as a railway facility related to steam locomotives that played an important role in the modernization process.
