Maisan Mountain Tafoni Terrain

The two representative peaks of Maisan, the male and female peaks, each have unique caves. On the female peak, there is the Hwaeom Cave, where a monk is said to have obtained the Buddhist scriptures Yeonhwa and Beophwagyeong, hidden deep within, spouting rocky spring water. On the male peak, the southern slope features a wide expanse of honeycomb caves of various shapes.

When viewing Maisan from the south, small caves resembling bomb craters can be seen on the peaks, which are called tafoni topography, boasting the largest scale in the world. The tafoni of Maisan are said to have formed during the Ice Age of the Quaternary Period of the Cenozoic Era and the subsequent cold period. In particular, the honeycomb caves of the male peak boast the largest scale in the world.
