Gihwari Elephant Rock

The Gihwari area is composed of dark gray to light gray limestone and dolomitic limestone. This rock is called Elephant Rock by the residents because its shape resembles an elephant, and this name has been used to this day. Gihwari Elephant Rock is made of limestone deposited during the Ordovician period of the Lower Paleozoic Era, approximately 450 million years ago. Limestone is a rock formed by the accumulation of shells of organisms that produce calcium carbonate (CaCO3) in shallow seas in warm tropical and subtropical climates, and it belongs to sedimentary rocks in rock classification. At the top of this site, the Gomaru Karst topography is developed, and on heavy rainy days, water that has seeped into the surface of the upper karst flows out through this point, forming a waterfall.
