Heundeulbawi Rock (Ulsanbawi Rock Trail)

Heundeulbawi Rock is a famous attraction of Seoraksan Mountain, second only to Ulsanbawi Rock. It is located at the entrance of Gyejoam Hermitage, where the Silla-era monks Uisang and Wonhyo Daesa are said to have practiced asceticism. A round-shaped rock stands atop a flat boulder called Waubam (Reclining Ox Rock) or Sikdangam (Dining Hall Rock), and it is slightly taller than a person with a circumference that can accommodate about 4 to 5 people. Interestingly, it looks as if it might topple over with the slightest touch, but whether pushed by one person or several, the degree of shaking is similar. Everyone who visits Gyejoam Hermitage gives this rock a push at least once. Heundeulbawi Rock is also called Soebawi (Iron Rock) or Ugakseok (Ox Horn Rock) because it is located at the head of Waubam. It is situated midway on the trail from Seoraksan Small Park to Ulsanbawi Rock, taking about 1 hour from the Small Park to Heundeulbawi Rock, and a little over 1 hour more to climb from there to Ulsanbawi Rock.
