전북특별자치도 남원시 산내면 와운길 249

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Waun Village is located within Jirisan National Park, situated at an elevation of 800m on the northeastern side of Jirisan Mountain. Starting from the Baemsagol Exploration Information Center, if you go about 3km inward, you will find a village surrounded by mountainous terrain. This village possesses natural resources such as the Baemsagol autumn foliage, and its name 'Waun' means 'a place so high and rugged that even clouds lie down,' also known as 'Nungol' or 'Nuungol.' It is said that when the Imjin War broke out in 1592, around 1595, the Yeonggwang Jeong clan and the Gimnyeong Kim clan sought deep mountains and valleys to escape the national crisis, and settled here as a refuge due to the clear air and good mountain scenery, leading to the formation of the village that has been inhabited to this day. Waun Village is home to the Jirisan Millennium Pine, the village's guardian spirit, and within the village, there are well-equipped recreational facilities such as pensions, guesthouses, gardens, farms, and log cabins.
