Gapgot Martyrs' Shrine

인천광역시 강화군 강화읍 해안동로1366번길 35

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

In 1866, the French fleet landed at Gapgot Dondae (fortress) to hold accountable for the execution of nine French clergymen. This led to severe persecution in the Ganghwa region, and many believers were martyred on the white sand beach visible from Gapgot Shrine. In 1871, Woo Yun-jip, Choi Sun-bok, and Park Sang-son were martyred at Gapgot Jindu (headland) on charges of having visited an American warship. Later, the Catholic Diocese of Incheon identified the exact location of Gapgot Jindu, established the current Gapgot Martyrs' Shrine, and held the first Mass at Gapgot Martyrs' Shrine on February 10, 2004. The Ganghwa Island shrines include the Hill of Exaltation for Ten Thousand Martyrs, Jinmuyeong (Garrison) Martyrs' Shrine, and Gwancheong-ri Hyeongbang (execution ground), where pilgrims can visit the Stations of the Cross, the Martyrs' Triad Monument, and the tomb of Peter Park Sun-jip.
