Jinwi Hyanggyo

Jinwi Hyanggyo, located in Bongnam-ri, Jinwi-myeon, Pyeongtaek-si, is known as the best auspicious site among hyanggyo, founded in 1398. All buildings were lost to the flames of the Manchu invasion of 1636, but in 1644, Magistrate Nam Du-geuk restored its grandeur by rebuilding the Daeseongjeon. Jinwi Hyanggyo follows the layout of 'jeonhak-humyo' (school in front, shrine behind), and the Daeseongjeon enshrines the spirit tablets of 27 sages. Every spring and fall, a seokjeonje (ritual) is held to honor Confucius and the other sages. However, the value of Jinwi Hyanggyo does not end there. This hyanggyo is situated in an exceptionally advantageous location according to feng shui principles. It was built considering the surrounding topography, including Jinwicheon Stream, Toebongsan Mountain, and Janganpyeong Plain, faithfully adhering to the basic principles of feng shui. Jinwi Hyanggyo is reputed to have the best feng shui among hyanggyo nationwide, with its location itself harmonizing with natural beauty. Thus, Jinwi Hyanggyo is a harmonious treasure of history and feng shui, preserving its value forever.
