Papyeong Yongyeon

This is a pond associated with the birth legend of Yun Shin-dal, the founder of the Papyeong Yun clan, whose main family seat is Papyeong. Yun Shin-dal was a figure from the late Unified Silla period to the early Goryeo period. He was born at this Yongyeon and became the progenitor of the Papyeong Yun clan. He assisted King Taejo Wang Geon, who founded the Goryeo dynasty, in achieving the unification of the Three Han (Samhan) and was awarded the second rank of meritorious subject for founding the dynasty. Later, he rose to the position of Samjungdaegwang Taesa, a tutor to the crown prince, and after Taejo's death, when King Hyejong ascended the throne, he was appointed as the Grand Governor of the Donggyeong Daedohobu in Seorabeol.

Yongyeon is a natural pond where groundwater has risen since ancient times. The birth legend of Yun Shin-dal is as follows: On the 15th day of the 8th lunar month in the 7th year of King Jinseong of Silla (893 AD), a golden chest floated up in Yongyeon, shrouded in mist. An elderly woman named Yun On, who lived nearby, retrieved and opened it, finding a jade boy inside. It is said that the child was wrapped in jade-colored fur, had red spots on both shoulders, 81 scales on both armpits, and black spots shaped like the Big Dipper on the soles of his feet. The child grew up to hold high office, and he was Yun Shin-dal, the founder of the Papyeong Yun clan.
