Bongseojeong Pavilion

Located opposite Dangnam-ri Island, Bongseojeong is a pavilion from the Goryeo Dynasty in Subumal Village. It is a great place for healing, offering the serene atmosphere of a quiet rural village. Built by the late Goryeo scholar Dunchon Ijip (1327–1387) when he retired to Ipo, it was restored in 1995 by the Gwangju Lee Clan Association to preserve Dunchon's historical significance. The original location of the pavilion is unknown, so a new site was purchased and the current two-story pavilion was reconstructed. The pavilion is a three-bay front, two-bay side building with a hipped-and-gabled roof, featuring colorful dancheong and a plaque inscribed with 'Bongseojeong' by I Hyeongjae. Originally, Ijip studied here, and Jeong Mong-ju visited to seek advice on state affairs. It is said that nearby were I Saek's Chimnyujeong and Cheongnyakjae, and Kim Gu-yong's Yukuudang. Ijip's clan was Gwangju, his courtesy name was Hoyeon, and his pen name was Dunchon. He passed the civil service exam in 1349 and entered officialdom. He associated with Po-eun Jeong Mong-ju and Mok-eun I Saek. During King Gongmin's reign, he criticized Shin Don's tyranny, incurring his wrath, and fearing for his life, he went into hiding for four years. After Shin Don was executed, he returned to office but soon resigned and retired to Yeoju Cheonnyeong-hyeon, present-day Ipo, where he built Bongseojeong, taught students, and spent his remaining years. The name of Dunchon-dong in Seoul's Gangdong-gu District originates from his pen name, and he was buried in Seongnam-si after his death.
