Kim Sat-gat Grave

Located in Norumok Village, Kim Sat-gat Grave is the burial site of Kim Byeong-yeon, a wandering poet from the late Joseon Dynasty famous as Kim Sat-gat. The name Kim Sat-gat originated from Kim Byeong-yeon wearing a bamboo hat (sat-gat) and traveling across the country writing poems throughout his life. Situated in the Yangbaek region where Taebaek Mountain and Sobaek Mountain connect, Kim Sat-gat Grave is said to be a propitious site where the ridge of Madae Mountain flows down like a willow branch. Madae Mountain is famous for Kim Sat-gat Recreation Area. Kim Byeong-yeon, whose pen name was Nango, was a descendant of the Andong Kim clan and was born in Yangju, Gyeonggi Province. In 1811 (the 11th year of King Sunjo's reign), when his grandfather Kim Ik-sun surrendered during the Hong Gyeong-rae Rebellion, he settled in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province with his mother. From around age 20, he gave up the civil service examination and began wandering. He died in 1863 (the 14th year of King Cheoljong's reign) at age 57 in Dongbok, Hwasun County, South Jeolla Province. After 120 years, his grave was moved to its current location in Yeongwol. In front of the grave with a small burial mound, there is a stone table and a tombstone made of natural stone, and a poetry monument stands in front of the grave site. On the flat ground below Kim Sat-gat Grave, the Nango Kim Sat-gat Literature Museum opened in October 2003, and about 2 km away lies the birthplace of Kim Byeong-yeon.
