Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

A mountain on the border of Kimsatgat-myeon, Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province and Yeongchun-myeon, Danyang-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, included in the 300 Famous Mountains selected by Korea's mountains and rivers. Madaesan is home to the historic site of Kim Byeong-yeon, also known as Kim Satgat, who wandered the eight provinces wearing a bamboo hat all his life. Here, you can see his birthplace, grave, and other sites, and the autumn foliage of Seonnakgol Valley is very beautiful. The view of the Donggang River from the 1,052m summit, the dense forest blocking sunlight, and the beautiful valley scenery are famous. The Madaesan hiking trail starts from Kim Satgat's birthplace and leads to the summit, with the shortest course being 4.39km. At the entrance of the trail, in front of Kim Satgat's grave, there are dozens of stone towers and a shrine, attracting tourists' attention. The nearby Kim Satgat Historic Site is located in Norumok. It is called Norumok because the mountain range resembles a roe deer lying down. The Gokdongcheon Stream flowing through the historic site is as clear as glass in summer, with abundant water flowing between oddly shaped rocks, and in autumn, the colorful foliage is breathtaking. Looking down at the Donggang River through the oddly shaped rocks in the beautiful valley of Madaesan, you encounter the literary sensibility of Kim Satgat, who lived as a wandering poet all his life.
