Bongsan-dong Dangganjiju

강원특별자치도 원주시 개봉교길 41

Destination briefing

Why travelers stop here

Dangganjiju (flagpole supports) are installed at the entrance of a temple. When there is an event or ceremony at the temple, a flag called 'dang' is hung. The long pole used to hang this flag is called 'dangan', and the two stone pillars that support the dangan from both sides are called 'dangganjiju'.

This dangganjiju, located next to the inner stream in Bongsan-dong, Wonju-si, is said to have originally stood within a temple founded during the Unified Silla period. The base platform is buried underground, so its shape cannot be seen, and only the left and right pillars and the stone support between them remain. The stone support, made of natural stone, has both ends carved out to fit the bottoms of the pillars, and on its upper surface, a circular groove is carved in the center to hold the flagpole. The two pillars are rectangular but gradually narrow toward the top, coming to a pointed end.
