Why travelers stop here
Wondong Catholic Church is a Catholic church built in 1913. During the Korean War, the building was completely destroyed by fire, and it was rebuilt with cement bricks in 1954. This building is also where Bishop Ji Hak-sun made the 'Wonju Declaration' during the Yushin regime in the 1970s, making it a symbol of the democratization movement in the Wonju region. Wondong Catholic Church is a rectangular building with a bell tower at the center of the front. Its length is very long compared to its width, and the upper part of the bell tower is dome-shaped. The exterior walls are finished with a washed artificial stone technique, and the joints are made to look like stone masonry, giving the building a high-quality appearance. Although it was rebuilt after the war, the exterior is highly refined and the original form is very well preserved.
