Gulsansa Temple Site Dangganjiju (Flagpole Supports)

Introduction This is the largest flagpole support in Korea, made from a single massive stone. Currently, the lower part is buried, so the lower structure, including the base stone (gidaeseok) on which the flagpole was erected, cannot be identified. The four sides are plain with no decoration, and the lower part retains the rough chisel marks from stone dressing without being smoothed away. The inner faces and outer sides facing each other are vertical, and the front and back sides are also vertical up to the top, but near the upper end, the head part is gradually rounded from both sides to form a curve. The top is pointed, but the tip of the southern support is slightly damaged.

Tourist Attraction Description Gulsansa Temple Site Dangganjiju was designated as Treasure No. 86 on January 21, 1963, and is a relic of Gulseonsa Temple founded by National Preceptor Beomil. Its height is 5.4 meters. The bars for fixing the flagpole are installed in two places, upper and lower. In the upper part, a round hole is made near the top to install the bar, and in the lower part, a hole is drilled at about one-third of the height to insert the bar. Its scale is massive, and it draws attention with its simple and sturdy technique befitting its size. One can glimpse the grand sculptural beauty typical of the Unified Silla period.
