Myeongpa Beach

This is a beach located at the northernmost point of the east coast. With a 500m stretch of fine white sand on a quiet beach surrounded by spectacular rocks and cliffs, it is popular as a family vacation spot. This beach is located on the way to the Unification Observatory, and is a summer resort visited by many tourists heading to the observatory; it is temporarily opened in cooperation with the military base. Although small and cozy, it is quiet and secluded, and as its name Myeongpa-ri (a beautiful village with clear waters of the East Sea and clean white sand) suggests, it retains the unspoiled simplicity of nature. Next to the beach flows Myeongpacheon Stream, which is a spawning ground for sweetfish and salmon, and every October many anglers come to catch sweetfish. Myeongpa-ri has many farms raising native pigs, and native pork dishes, with tender and savory meat, are a local specialty. If you head directly to Myeongpa-ri without going to the Unification Observatory, you do not need to receive the security education provided at the observatory.
