Goseong Munam-ri Site

The Goseong Munam-ri Prehistoric Site is located on a sand dune on the southern slope of a hilly area about 400m inland from the east coast. Nearby, early Iron Age remains are distributed, indicating that the site was formed over multiple periods. From December 1998 to March 1999, the National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage under the Cultural Heritage Administration conducted an excavation of approximately 200 pyeong of the entire site, confirming the deposition of 5 artifact-bearing layers and 3 Neolithic cultural layers, and discovering various features such as 3 dwelling sites and outdoor hearths. This site is very important for revealing the Neolithic cultures of Northeast Asia, including the northeastern part of the Korean Peninsula, the three northeastern provinces of China, and the Amur River coast of Russia, as well as the origins and migration routes of prehistoric people on the Korean Peninsula, and the cultural systems and extent of diffusion at that time. Munam-ri Prehistoric Site is the most tranquil place among Goseong tourist destinations.
